The UWI Singers Tour The UK

Jamaica National Building Society in association with Birmingham City Council is proud to present The University of the West Indies (UWI) Singers as they get ready to embark on their second UK tour. Similar to university choirs in the UK, the UWI Singers have established themselves as one of the leading choral group groups in the Caribbean. However, these highly talented singers bring a new slant to the traditional ideas of university choirs.

They are noted for their musical versatility, with their usual numbers crossing a wide variety of genres. An evening with the University Singers will be filled with classical, gospel, jazz, and even local and international pop music. As ambassadors for the University of the West Indies and Caribbean music itself, they also include original numbers from Caribbean composers.

Their performance is another aspect that sets them apart from many other choirs. Professor Rex Nettleford, the late artistic director has been accredited with giving the University Singers their never seen before performance technique. This approach was so avant-garde that it required a new name – choral theatre. Nowadays, pop culture would liken their energetic performance style to Glee.

It is through these well thought out performances that the University Singers are able to achieve one of their main goals; to entertain their audiences by sharing the joy of making music and using it as a high form of expression.

The University Singers’ talents have not gone unnoticed and have in fact won them many prestigious awards in the Caribbean; the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in 2003, and four Jamaica Music Industry (Awards) but to name a few. They’ve also represented the West Indies before some of the most notable figures in history. President Nelson Mandela, Kofi Anan, Desmond Tutu and Queen Elizabeth II have all enjoyed the sounds of the University Singers. In 1995 the group also had the opportunity to perform for a global audience with an appearance on NBC TV’s popular The Today Show.

The University Singers are a much loved and respected group in Jamaica. Their support on the island starts at grassroots with the everyday man and flies as high as the Jamaican Tourism Board. The Jamaican population is immensely proud of their University Singers so – more than a decade since their last visit in 1997 – it is with pride that they will wave them off as they embark on their second UK tour.

Kicking off in Croydon on 25th July, the UWI Singers will be performing at venues in Birmingham, London, Manchester and more. As part of their tour they’ll also be performing 3 dates in Germany.

Quiz Media supports Bloomango

From arabesques to zayak rules, Birmingham City Centre will see it all this summer when it hosts Skatefest 2010 aka Bloomango.

The two-week-long event, organised by Bloomango Events in conjunction with Birmingham City Council, promises to be the biggest event since the German Christmas Market, and will bring action, glamour and culture to the UK’s second city.

Starting on Saturday August 14th, Skatefest 2010 will see a temporary roller-rink erected in Centenary Square, while a packed timetable of activities and entertainment with ensure that the square is a buzzing hub for cultural diversity.

Marcia Blackwood, director for Bloomango, said: “This is an idea that has been blossoming for some time, and thanks to the support of Birmingham City Council and Broad Street BID, it will come to fruition in August.

“Skatefest 2010 will allow people of all ages to strap on their skates and put their best foot forward, while those who prefer to keep their feet on solid ground can enjoy entertainment from the likes of Littler Britain, Spongebob Squarepants and Titan the Robot.

“Over the course of the fortnight, we’ll be incorporating a whole range of entertainment and exhibitions to entice and educate the people of Birmingham; from salsa-skating to gospel choirs, a summer Ibiza party to a Bangra night and from jazz to rock, we’ll be catering for every taste, while colleges will also have an opportunity to reach prospective students and community groups to explain their work to the people they benefit,” said Marcia.

The skating sessions will be divided by age, enabling families to use the rink from 10am-2pm each day, teenagers from 2pm-6pm, while adults can use the rink from 6pm-10pm. There will be full supervision, and a licensed bar for adults from 6pm onwards.

Marcia added: “We have some pretty exciting guests lined up which we’ll be announcing nearer the time – though we know that some would argue that it doesn’t get any better than Titan.”

The full activity schedule is being revised ahead of the launch and will be updated online at www.bloomango.com. Community groups interested in a presence at the event should contact the events team on 0844 556 1112.
